WELCOME to THE CURRENT, the weekly digital newsletter for the Town of Oak Island.

"Lonely rivers flow, to the sea, to the sea, to the open arms of the sea ... I'll be coming home, wait for me!" These lyrics from arguably the most famous and definitive rendition of Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers (sorry, Elvis fans), hold true even today, because of their timeless message. Much like the flow of a river, love is journey, that can take many bends and even hit a few rapids on it's way to the ultimate destination of "Home." Because like Home, Love is also where your heart is.

And in both the figurative and literal sense, for many here in Oak Island, their love and their home also just happen to be where the rivers flow into the open arms of the sea. Whether that river is the mighty Cape Fear to the East, or the gentle Lockwoods Folly to the West, we're set in the middle of a Sea of Love as we look forward to a Valentine's week ahead.

But first, there's a wide range of important Town business and events to cover, as "the Love Boat promises something for everyone" in this week's edition of The CURRENT.

Website Change Notice

In 2025, the Oak Island Town Website received nearly 1.5M views, with well over 3.5M individual clicks throughout the various pages (that's "M" as in "Million").

Launched in mid-2020, the current iteration of the Town Website was built on an architecture from a time which favored desktops over mobile devices. While significant steps have been taken to refine and improve the Website, after more than 5 years of faithful service, it's time for a change.

 New Website Promo

NOTICE: This coming Thursday, February 12 at 1:00 PM, the Town of Oak Island Website will officially launch a NEW website!

This NEW Town Website is built to be more functional, easy to use, and "mobile-focused" for a better display on smartphones, tablets, and other handheld devices. It also features a powerful new search engine placed front and center on the homepage, as well as an ALL-NEW Contact Form making it easy to find the Departments & Services you're looking for!

Best of all, the NEW Town Website will keep the same domain of OakIslandNC.gov, so you don't have to do anything except refresh the page on your browser! As a side bonus, the OKI Connection mobile app will also be updated to mirror these visual changes.

PLEASE NOTE: During the transition to the NEW Website, users may experience a few minutes of downtime for the site, or have some pages load incorrectly. These issues should be minimal, and will correct themselves shortly.

For any questions or concerns regarding the NEW Town Website, just contact the Communications Office through the Department Contact Form at OakIslandNC.gov/CONTACT or click the link below.

Both the Wilmington Harbor and the Off-Shore Oak Island (OS-OKI) projects are transitioning into the demobilization phase, where equipment is actively being removed from the beach and staging areas. A Tree To Honor A Clerk

In Staff Spotlight section of the August 2025 Edition, we highlighted the achievements of Town Clerk, Lisa Stites, who had just been named Clerk of The Year by the North Carolina Association of Municipal Clerks (NCAMC).

Staff Spotlight

As part of that honor, the NCAMC will usually plant a tree or dedicate an existing tree in the named clerk's hometown. Graciously accepting that honor, Stites has selected the tree just outside of her office window at Town Hall.

Next Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at 2:00 PM, all are welcome to join in a brief Tree Dedication Ceremony at the third tree located directly behind Town Hall at 4601 E Oak Island Drive, where representatives from the NCAMC will be on hand to make a formal dedication in honor of Oak Island Town Clerk, Lisa Stites.

As part of the dedication, a commemorative plaque will be installed, forever instilling her legacy of service to both the Town of Oak Island and the entire State Association. To learn more about the Town Clerk and the important roles served, just visit the dedicated page on the Town Website at OakIslandNC.gov/CLERK or click the link below.

Public Safety Positions Now Available

Although 2026 may not feel very "new" anymore, this could still be the year that brings you into a new career! Or at least, one that provides a change of scenery in your current one! The are currently several Public Safety positions positions available the Town is hiring for, you could be the next person to join our team:

POLICE OFFICER The Oak Island Police Department has a Police Officer position now available. This position offers regionally competitive salaries with benefits, PLUS other benefits including Health / Dental / Vision / Life Insurance, 401K Contribution, State Retirement Plan, Annual & Sick Leave, Overtime Opportunities, and Take Home Vehicles.

Officers perform a full range of general law enforcement duties, within the framework of our Community Policing model. This includes patrolling the nearly 20 square miles within the Town, including the 10 miles of beachfront, and providing services to the 10,000 full-time residents and a seasonal population of over 50,000. Oak Island works hard to successfully maintain a balance of its bustling, vibrant tourism, with the traditional, quiet charm of a moderately sized coastal community. The Police Department and its officers go far in helping to build the community relationships and trust which maintains that balance.

OCEAN RESCUE The Oak Island Fire Department is still actively hiring for the Ocean Rescue Team within the Beach Safety Unit (BSU), with the 2026 Rescue Academy training these positions scheduled to start in April.

Ocean Rescue is a challenging, yet highly rewarding part of the Beach Safety Unit. Training, uniforms, and equipment are provided for these hourly, seasonal positions. Participating in the BSU is a great way for seasoned first responders to use their experience in a non-competitive, part-time environment; or equally beneficial for learning life-saving skills that can help to build a future career.
