The following changes will be made to the Town's Social Media Accounts, beginning in JANUARY 2026.

• The Town's X (Twitter) account will be CLOSED.
• The Town Facebook page will be updated, and individual department pages will be CONSOLIDATED into the single official page, including:
  • The Fire Department page
  • The Police Department page
  • The Recreation Department page
  • The 801 Ocean Event Center page
• The Town's Instagram Page will be REACTIVATED and all individual department pages will be consolidated into the single official page, including:
  • The Fire Department Instagram
  • The Recreation Department Instagram
• Once current pages and accounts have been updated / consolidated, the Town may ADD additional social media platforms, based on audience interest.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? On each existing platform and any new platforms added, the Town will maintain a single, official account. All information and social interaction with the Town will be focused in one, easy to find location for each platform. 

WHY MAKE THIS CHANGE? This is the first significant change in the Town's social media landscape in over a decade; but to put it simply, the landscape of social media itself is changing, and we are adapting in order to serve you better!

Unlike the "old days," news feeds today are driven by algorithms and advertising, instead of what's really most important to you. Continuing to divide the Town's voice among several pages on the same platforms just doesn't make good sense.

10, or even 15 years ago, and for a time even served as the Town's primary means of public communication. While we honor the role they served and will preserve their archives, our services have grown.

We now have robust and reliable ways of delivering Town information directly to you, through the OKInformation system and the OKI Connection mobile app, along with a brand new Town Website coming in 2026. While these platforms do the "heavy lifting" of news and emergency updates, our social media accounts are now free to serve their intended purpose: engaging directly with you on a fun, informative level!

As pages merge and new accounts are added, expect to see more user interaction, increased content production, and improved comment moderation.

OKInformation (OKI + Information) is the Town's primary public notification system. It serves as a central hub for all News & Notices from the Town of Oak Island, and provides the latest updates and public information from every department, service, and division within the Town Government.

Email Notifications & Emergency Text Alerts are also available through the system, with registration available at www.OakIslandNC.gov/INFO.

The CURRENT is an award-winning, digital monthly newsletter produced by the Town of Oak Island. Started in December of 2020 as a monthly edition, The CURRENT now provides a weekly review of the news, events, and notices for the Town of Oak Island!

Now available for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play this self-published app provides a mobile-friendly version of the Town Website, with “easy buttons” linked to the most requested services and departments. OKI-TV is the public information cable television channel for the Town of Oak Island. The channel can be found on Spectrum Cable.

Charter Communications, Inc., is an American telecommunications and mass media company with services branded as Spectrum. With over 26 million customers in 41 states, it is the second-largest cable operator in the United States by subscribers, just behind Comcast, and third-largest pay TV operator behind Comcast and AT&T. Charter is the fifth-largest telephone provider based on number of residential lines. Charter Communications (via Spectrum) is one f several cable television and internet service providers in Oak Island and throughout Brunswick County.

Spectrum provides channel bandwidth on their cable service to the Town, as part of their compliance with PEG Channel requirements through the State of North Carolina. 

Under North Carolina General Statute 105-164.44J(b), counties and municipalities that have qualifying Public, Educational, or Governmental access (PEG) channels, which were provided for their use during the fiscal year by a cable service provider under either G.S.. 66-357 or an existing agreement, must certify the number of such channels annually. In order to be a qualifying PEG channel, the channel must meet all qualifying criteria listed by the State of North Carolina's Local Government Division. The Local Government Division provides support and services to the counties and municipalities of North Carolina as well as taxpayers concerning taxes collected locally by the counties and municipalities.

All public meetings of the Oak Island Town Council and Planning Board are broadcast LIVE on OKI-TV, as well as replayed on a daily schedule. Additionally, special programs or recordings of Town events may air intermittently throughout the year. In-between live and rebroadcast videos, informational slides are aired, which provide basic knowledge of Town departments, services, and resources.

The Town of Oak Island maintains accounts on a variety of social media platforms. These outlets are used for fast distribution of Public Notification and Public Engagement; and serve to compliment the OKInformation system, which is the primary notification tool for the Town.

PLEASE NOTE: There are several social media accounts that have similar names, or appear to represent the Town of Oak Island.  Only the accounts listed below are the OFFICIAL accounts authorized and maintained by the Town.  Although any outlet may share / repost content from their pages, only these accounts should be regarded as an official source of information. 

COMMENTING ON SOCIAL MEDIA

The Town of Oak Island publishes social media posts in TWO different forms: for Public Notice and for Public Engagement. As a general rule:

• Public Notices provide information on critical safety concerns, new actions being taken by the Town, or public actions needed. As such, these posts DO NOT have commenting enabled. This is to minimize the negative impacts of confusion or misinformation, and allow staff to perform other critical duties, instead of having to monitor comments. 
  • EXAMPLE: "A Voluntary Evacuation Order has been issued - details in the link provided."

• Public Engagement posts provide information on "non-critical" items, and are meant to provide a "public forum" where feedback from the community is welcomed and open discussion encouraged. As such, these posts DO have comments enabled, which are monitored by staff to ensure timely responses are provided, spam / scams attempts are reported and hidden, and that users maintain a respectful atmosphere.
  • EXAMPLE: "Summer Concerts begin this Friday, comment below with your favorite bands on this year's schedule!" 

"Why does the Town limit public commenting?" This is a good, and commonly received question. Just like an ad in the newspaper, or media release sent to local TV news outlets, Public Notices are meant to be a "one-way" communication, which provide basic, factual information directly to those affected.

These are not topics which are open for discussion, and are usually of a time-sensitive nature, like response to a natural disaster or other emergency event. In these cases, the multitude of different questions, opinions, or even misinformation shared through commenting, can prevent a post from achieving the main goal of informing the public on critical safety concerns.

Even through commenting is turned off, Public Notices STILL provide resources on how to ask questions directly to Town staff. Additionally, they also allow for sharing on private social media pages, where personal opinions can be voiced.

The current Oak Island Logo (pictured above) was adopted by the Town Council during their regular meeting on October 12, 2021.

Prior to the adoption of this logo, the Town had used the Town Seal for all promotional, legislative, and administrative materials produced. While this served the purpose for most activities, the need for a simple, yet unique way to visually represent the Town steadily become more apparent over time.

While they equally represent the organization they serve, a seal and a logo are two distinct properties, with two very specific purposes. A town's seal is an intricate, ornate design that tells the history of the town, and is useful for all legal documentation such as resolutions, ordinances, and proclamations. A logo on the other hand provides a simple, yet well thought out design which allows the town to be immediately recognizable on promotional media such as apparel, vehicle branding, and signage.

The logo approved by the Town Council, nicknamed the "tree to sea" design, strives to encapsulate the aspects that define the Town of Oak Island. It uses a color scheme derived from the Town Seal, and prominently displays the Town name, surrounded by a live oak tree on the left, and gentle waves on the right. All watched over faithfully by the ever-in-flight seagull above. Below, it features the the state name, to further distinguish the Town from some other "cursed" oak islands, along with an updated version of the Town slogan "A Place to Coast."

Along with the new logo, a "Logo & Seal Usage Guide" was adopted as well. This provides vendors and partner organizations with exact details on color and sizing requirements, to ensure the logo is always correctly displayed.
