Public art is woven into the character of Oak Island, from colorful murals that celebrate our coastal life to sculptures that honor local history and natural beauty. These works turn everyday spaces into destinations, sparking conversation and inspiring community pride. By supporting public art, the Town fosters creativity, connection, and a welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.
Public Art Trail
Explore Oak Island’s creativity through the Public Art Trail, an interactive Story Map that guides you to murals, sculptures, and other installations across town. Along the way, you’ll learn about each piece, the artists behind the work, and the stories that connect them to our community.
Call to Artists
When the Town of Oak Island identifies an opportunity or need for new public art, we invite artists to be part of the process through an official Call to Artists. These calls provide details about the project location, goals, and requirements, along with instructions on how to apply. By participating, artists have the chance to share their creativity, contribute to the town’s cultural landscape, and leave a lasting mark on the community.
Active opportunities will be posted below as they become available.

Public Art & Donations Policy
The Town of Oak Island has adopted a Policy for Public Art and Other Donations to Public Spaces to ensure new art and amenities are added in a thoughtful, transparent, and sustainable way. This policy helps guide both town-led projects (through Requests for Proposals/Calls to Artists) and community-led donations, such as benches, sculptures, and other contributions to public spaces.
The policy ensures that all donations:
-
Align with the Town’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan and aesthetic standards
-
Enhance the visual appeal and character of our public spaces
-
Can be maintained safely and sustainably
-
Contribute to the cultural, artistic, or historical identity of Oak Island
