Advisory boards and committees are an important part of local government. Participation of all Town residents is welcome and encouraged!

The Oak Island Town Council is now accepting applications from interested persons for the following appointed boards/committees:
- Environmental Advisory Committee (unexpired term ending June 2026)
- Planning Board (unexpired term ending August 2027)
- Business Advisory Board (unexpired term ending September 2027)
Appointments may be made at the February 10, 2026, Council meeting. Please submit applications to the Deputy Town Clerk by noon on Friday, January 30, 2026, at 4601 E. Oak Island Drive, or via email to ebaker@oakislandnc.gov.

The Town of Oak Island’s Board of Adjustment plays an important role in the Town’s functions. The Board hears and decides quasi-judicial cases such as Variance requests and Appeals of staff determinations. This Board meets on an as-need basis as new applications are submitted.

The Business Advisory Board (BAB) will provide recommendations and advice to the Town Council on ways the town can help business in Oak Island, provide a forum for businesses to raise issues, create a business-friendly environment, and have input into town policy and responses to these issues.
The BAB will provide input and recommendations on the Town’s Economic Development Strategy, with a particular emphasis on small business development, realization of commercial areas, business recruitment, retention, and expansion efforts, public/private partnerships, and business customer service. The BAB will keep the Town Council, the Town Manager, and Economic Development Officer abreast of conditions in the business community and how these conditions might affect business-government relations and needs for public services.
The Business Advisory Board shall:
- Serve as an advisory board for the town to further promote business interests in the town, to provide a coordination medium between businesses in the town, and to provide a communications path between the business community and the town government and administration.
- Suggest policies and make recommendations concerning business programs and requirements to the town manager and the town council.
- Serve as a link between the business community, the town manager, the town council, and the citizens of the community on matters related to business.
Meetings are held the fourth Tuesdays of the month at 9:00 AM in the Police Department Training Room.

This Committee's purpose is to advise the Town on the adaptation and application of appropriate policies which support land uses that enhance, protect, maintain and preserve natural resources and environmentally fragile areas. Specifically, the Committee is dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of our island’s unique and fragile ecosystem. The Committee approaches this task through education of Town residents, including the organization of events such as marsh pick-ups, the construction of rain gardens, continuing to meet Tree City USA reporting requirements, achieving Green Initiative objectives, assisting Town Staff in the preparation of the stormwater permit, monitoring existing conditions and identifying areas of environmental concern and proposing remediation for those areas. Meetings are the first Thursday of each month at 8:30 AM in the Ocean Education Center (4700 E. Oak Island Drive).

The Recreation Advisory Board meets on the first Monday of each month at 4:00 PM in the Community Center, located at 4701 E. Oak Island Drive (Middleton Park). For exact meeting dates and times, please check the Meetings Calendar at the bottom of this page.
According to Town ordinance, the duties of this board are as follows:
Recreation Advisory Board responsibilities:
- Serves as an advisory board for the Recreation Department and the Town Council
- Suggests policies and make recommendations concerning recreation programs, plans and facilities to the Recreation Director, the Town Manager and the Town Council
- Serves as a link between the recreation director, the Town Manager, the Town Council and the citizens of the community on matters in the leisure services area
- Consults with and advise the recreation director, the Town Manager and the Town Council in matters affecting recreation policies, programs, finances and the acquisition and disposal of lands and properties related to the total community recreation program, and to its long-range projected program for recreation
- Makes recommendations to the public works department concerning tree planting or beautification projects for public parks and recreation facilities
- Conducts an annual review and update of the ten-year parks and recreation master plan to present to Town Council.

The Oak Island Par 3 Committee is charged with the following tasks:
- Recommend to the Town Manager programs to increase play and memberships and assist Town staff as needed to implement approved programs.
- Recommend to the Town Manager additional low-cost marketing campaigns and assist town staff as needed in implementing approved campaigns.
- Recommend to the Town Manager low-cost ideas for improving the condition of the course.
- Assist staff in working with the South Harbour Master POA to allow the Town to have increased access to the Clubhouse and increased space in order to provide more sales opportunities and other revenue-generating programs that may be identified.
- Survey similar golf courses for ideas and comparative operating statistics.
- Identify available grants and assist the Town Manager as needed in the application process for these grants.
- Recommend to the Town Manager any other cost-cutting measures that may be identified.
- Prepare annual report for the Town Council on the financial impacts and other results of any new programs and ideas that were implemented.
Appointment: Members shall be residents of the Town of Oak Island. Members will serve staggered three-year terms.
